My Approach to Learning DesignÂ
At the heart of my approach to designing learning solutions lies a simple yet powerful question: "Why?"
My passion for learning design isn't just about creating materials; it's about partnering with stakeholders and subject matter experts (SMEs) to uncover the core of their organization's learning needs and challenges. I am a problem solver who thrives in adversity. I firmly believe that a Learning & Development department shouldn't function as a short-order "deliverable kitchen," mindlessly fulfilling requests for courses, PowerPoints, or job aids without first insisting upon consultation from learning experts like myself.
As a true learning experience designer, I guide stakeholders in identifying the most appropriate learning solution for their specific challenges. This process is deeply aligned with Kirkpatrick's model of learning evaluation:
Level 1: Reaction - "Who is the audience?" Understanding our learners and their expectations is the foundation. It is crucial to consider their feedback to ensure the learning experience is engaging and meets their needs.
Level 2: Learning - "What do they need to know or be able to do?" I focus on defining clear learning objectives, ensuring that the content equips learners with the knowledge and skills they require.
Level 3: Behavior - "What is the best way to facilitate this learning to ensure on-the-job application?" I design with the goal of translating learning into practical application, aligning with workplace needs or desired learning outcomes.
Level 4: Results - "How will we measure the success of this learning solution?" Success is measured through concrete, observable results, such as improved performance, productivity, customer satisfcation, or other relevant outcomes.
These questions exemplify my approach to instructional design and eLearning development, aligning with Kirkpatrick's model at each level. While I possess expertise in industry-standard technologies to produce learning deliverables, which you can see ample evidence of using the links below, I understand that without thoughtful planning and goal-oriented development, even the most visually engaging training will fall short.
In today's fast-paced world, I recognize that respecting our learners' time and attention is paramount. These are two of any organization's most valuable resources. Every learning solution I craft not only serves the needs of SMEs and stakeholders but also acknowledges the precious nature of learners' time and attention.
